Today, I'm three minutes in the truth, I want to talk about the truth about selling songs. Maybe your mama asked you, hey, you sold in songs lately, or maybe you're dreaming about moving to Nashville, thinking you're gonna sell some songs. Truth is, you don't sell songs.
I've never sold a song. I've never sold a song. That's not how we do it, what we do is we license our songs.
The copyright owner, which is either you or your publisher, owns the RIGHT to make and distribute COPIES of your song. Copy. Right. Get it? You give the record label a license to make and distribute copies of your song in exchange for royalties.
Let's say Morgan Wallen wants to record your song. You don't sell it to him. You license it to him. You get Zero dollars for Morgan listening to the song, you get $0 for Morgan wanting to record your song, you get $0 for Morgan taking the song into the studio and recording your song. zero.
You don't make a dime until that song gets streamed, gets purchased, downloaded, spun on the radio, etc. You don't make a dime until that song actually generates some income. So if Morgan puts out the record, and nobody buys it, you get $0. If the record never comes out for whatever reason, you get $0. And I've had some of those!
It's not until the song actually comes out and somebody buys it, somebody spins it, somebody streams it, somebody plays it on the radio, somebody plays it on TV show that sort of thing, that your song actually starts to generate some income.
Bottom line: you don't sell songs. You license songs.
This has been 3 Minutes & The Truth.
God bless,
Brent
