Wordplay Thursday #137

Wordplay Thursday

Welcome to Wordplay Thursday!

Here’s a writing prompt for you. It’s a simple fill-in-the-blank. You can use one word or several. Feel free to get as crazy, genre-appropriate, or as imaginative as you want. The point is to get the creative juices flowing. And it’s a good thing to dig deeper, so don’t stop at the first idea that hits you. Try coming up with at least five things.

And this week, let’s try to get at least ONE IMAGE in at least one of our plays.

“Anger is _____.”

I’ll give you an example to get you started:

“Anger is lightning looking for a place to strike.

I’d love to hear what you come up with, so please share in the comments. Oh, and please keep your posts below an R-rating. It’s a family show, after all!

And thanks to Linda Keser, Mark Westendorf, Ken Matthiesen, Ty Devine, Tommy Kib, Sam Moore, MW McDonough,  Brandon Tijolo Russ, Joe Slyzelia, Nick S, Barney Coulter, Kris Rogge Fisher, Michael Klenda and everyone else for your great additions to Wordplay Thursday #136 (read it here)! Great job!

Since strong imagery is such an important part of professional-level songwriting, I’ve put together a course on imagery. It’s called, “Use Imagery To Supercharge Your Songwriting (Like The Pros Do)” and it’s available now!

The course guides you as you learn to:

  1. Effectively use both literal and figurative imagery.
  2. Make your story come to life using imagery.
  3. Prove your character’s personality using imagery.
  4. Make your listener connect to your character’s emotions using imagery.
  5. Hook your listener in the song’s first few lines using imagery.
  6. And begin more songs (more easily) using imagery exercises as the start of your songwriting process.

And since we’re all songwriters, that means you might not have the means to pay for the full course right now.  Not to worry.  I’ve made three packages of the course available.  Each one has great, helpful content.  Just choose the one that works best for you by CLICKING HERE.

And there is an upcoming LIVE imagery workshop on Tuesday, May 17.  Not only does it come with all the course materials, I’ll be there to answer your questions and walk you through some great material not covered in the course!

  1. Anger is:
-a clenched fist waiting for someone to say one more wrong thing.
-running way late in the morning and a neighbor greets you as you run out to your car with “Did you know you had a flat”?
-the distance between love and hate.
-watching your team play prevent defense late in the game.
-getting done and there’s no toilet paper.

  2. Anger is the judge’s voice getting louder, his face turning shades of red and I can’t stop smiling

Anger is someone spilling my coffee

Anger is Bernie Sanders signs showing up at a Donald Trump rally

Anger is your drill sergeant yelling in your ear how worthless you are as you do push ups in the rain.

Anger is the wind ripping leaves off a tree

Anger is the baseball size hail screaming down from Heaven pelting my new black 2016 2500hd Chevy truck

  3. Anger is …
    – a wasted resource
    – a companion of those seven deadlies
    – a flagrant abuse of discretion
    – a blown head gasket
    – when you are headed to the airport to catch a flight and traffic is backed up due to an accident. You get off the interstate and take back roads and make it. Then you cannot find a long-term parking space but make it to the gate and the door is closed in your face…

  4. Anger is…
    The opposite of patience.

Meant to be short lived, but has a purpose. Motivation to change something and make it better.

    Howling at the moon.

Gods way of testing us to see if we were paying attention in Church.

Drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

    Part of the healing.

  5. Anger is…………
Immanuel turning over tables in His Father’s temple.
    righteous, should I control it.
not always, but often an underlying fear.
sometimes, like a consuming hot log of festering worms hollowing out the soul.
sometimes an overwhelming frustration because I cannot avenge the a-hole that wrongfully kicked me out of the theatre.

  6. Anger is…

…keeping me up at night, stripping my heart with the devil’s blight.

…like a two-barreled gun. The first squarely hits its mark, the other loud blast, just a shot in the dark.

…burning my brain, like a coal-fed runaway train.

…a churning volcano waiting to blow up on whoever stands by, unbridled destruction leaving burned and dry.

…a whistling teapot that just won’t quit, an unending noise that’s oft full of *#it.

…a rodeo bull waiting for its next victim.

  7. Anger is a pillow absorbing tear-filled screams.
Anger is a mockingbird swooping at anything that moves near it’s nest.
Anger is a volcano spewing rivers of lava on a town of combustible houses.
Anger is a thousand-foot ocean swell crashing upon a sailboat.
Anger is a bouncer who just took a sucker punch.
